    Trustees Triumphant

Engaged Investor’s 2008 Trustee Awards winners have just been announced. Here’s our essential category-by-category guide

Leading trustees from across the country mixed with industry professionals at our unique ceremony on July 16 to celebrate the best of British trustees and pension schemes, with the Students’ Union Superannuation Scheme, Barnardo’s and Railways Pension Scheme Trustees among the worthy winners.

Running up to the event, readers and a panel of independent judges had combined forces to decide on awards across 11 categories. “We were delighted with the response we received this year,” said Engaged Investor editor Bob Campion. “Our online reader poll attracted over 500 votes in a matter of weeks which just shows how engaged trustees are with their pension schemes.”

Michael Barnes of the Students’ Union Superannuation Scheme walked away with the Trustee of the Year Award, and his board were runner-up in the Trustee Board of the Year category. Barnes had been nominated for over two decades of hard work. One trustee said: “He set up the scheme 25 years ago and it is still going strong under his expert leadership. He works tirelessly for his scheme and for members.”

The Railways Pensions Trustees won the Trustee Board of the Year category, recognizing the unique challenges the scheme faced from the Railways Pension Commission Report. Mike Sullivan of Veolia UK Pension Plan was named Pensions Manager of the Year, and was also highly commended for Best Trustee Training Plan.

Barnardo’s had a successful day, winning two awards – Best Communications Initiative and Best Popular Report and Accounts – and being highly commended in a third.

But none of it would have been possible without your nominations and votes, and our panel of expert judges. Many thanks to all those involved.
