    Jargon Buster: Independent Trustees

Independent (or professional) trustees are trustees from outside an organisation, who are paid for their service. They can plug gaps in the knowledge base of employer and member-nominated trustees. Independent trustees come from a wide range of backgrounds. Some are lawyers, others have been financial directors of a company. Therefore, it is useful to establish what areas of expertise your trustee board currently lacks and then appoint an independent trustee to fill in the gap.
