Speakers Steve Delo
A graduate in statistics from the University of London, Steve started his career in pensions administration and consulting with Noble Lowndes (now Mercer) in 1989. From 1994, Steve was a senior consultant responsible for a portfolio of corporate pension schemes and then, in 1998, joined the management team running Mercer’s “manager of managers” investment operation. In 2000, Steve co-led the management buy out of this operation to found Escher TEAMS, which became a leading independent “manager of managers” service. Steve was appointed Managing Director of Escher TEAMS in 2002 and was the driving force behind Escher’s rapid growth in its client portfolio and the development of its investment manager selection/monitoring techniques. He led the firm to the Professional Pensions Multi-Manager of the Year Awards for 2003 and 2005 and the Pensions Management 2004 Manager of Managers of the Year Award. In August 2005, Escher TEAMS was acquired by Close Brothers Group plc to form Close TEAMS (latterly Close Multi-Manager), of which Steve became Managing Director. He was also a Board Director of Close Investments. Steve left Close in December 2007 to enter partnership with the PAN Trustee Group to spearhead the growth of the firm’s trusteeship and governance services. As Corporate Deal Principal, Martyn has responsibility for the delivery of buy-in/buy-out/de-risking deals with DB pension schemes in the UK marketplace and leads negotiations on large deals of this nature. Martyn has over 19 years Financial Services experience. This includes 16 years working for major Employee Benefit Consultancies, of which he spent the last 8 years as a Senior Strategic Benefit Consultant for a Global Advisory business, involving working with employers and trustees to restructure and de-risk DB pension schemes as well as working on M&A and optimising employee benefit packages. In addition to his role as Corporate Deal Principal, during Martyn’s 3 years at Prudential he has also had strategic responsibility for Prudential’s participation in the Enhanced Transfer Value market place, leading all key activities including working with UK Execs and Employee Benefit Consultants, FSA interaction, PR strategy and strategic development of Prudential’s proposition. David is responsible for new business and pricing at Pension Corporation. He played a lead role on the Delta (£451m) and Thorn (£1.1bn) insurance buy outs. David is a qualified actuary with over 20 years of experience in actuarial consultancy and transaction services. Gavin holds an MA in Mathematics from St. John's College, Cambridge Gavin Francis is a Managing Director, responsible for the Client Portfolio Management team. This team provides the primary client contact for all matters regarding the management of portfolios Since joining Pareto in 1997, Gavin has acted as Client Portfolio Manager for clients in Europe, North America, the Middle East and Australia. He developed Pareto’s performance attribution systems and has a keen interest in analysing the way risk is managed in portfolios. Previously, Gavin worked as Head of Research at Paribas Asset Management, where he developed a quantitative framework for global asset allocation and was a member of the Strategic Investment Committee. Prior to this, Gavin was an Assistant Director at County NatWest Investment Management. Having started his career in 1987 working on the Quantitative Equity desk, he moved to the Product Development Group, where he constructed a successful global bond model and worked on the application of neural networks to stock selection. Bob joined Newsquest Specialist Media in November 2001, as news editor of monthly trade magazine Portfolio International. He became editor in 2003 and was launch editor of Engaged Investor in 2005. He oversaw the launch of The Fund Business in January 2007. Bob was elected member nominated trustee of the Newsquest Media Group Pension Scheme in 2006 and is chair of Raising Standards of Trustee Education, an industry-wide campaign. Before joining Newsquest Specialist Media, Bob was News Editor of weekly local newspaper the Enfield Independent, and a freelance reporter for a national newspaper. Emma is responsible for securing new business within the bulk annuity market through the development and management of ongoing relationships and enhancing MetLife Assurance’s profile within the industry. Emma has over 10 years experience in the pensions arena, where she has held positions with ACE Europe as trustee liability insurance product manager and prior to that with Hazell Carr Pensions Consulting and Prudential, where she had operational and client management responsibilities for multi-disciplined operational, defined benefit administration and pension technical areas. Emma holds the PMI Retirement Provision Diploma and is an Ordinary Member of the Institute (MPMI). Chris Hitchen
Chris is the Chief Executive of the Railways Pension Trustee Company, which runs the industry-wide pension arrangement for the UK’s railways, with total assets of £18 billion. He and his teams advise on benefit design and strategic asset allocation for around 100 employer groups within the arrangements, and administer the pension benefits for the 350,000 beneficiaries. He is a qualified actuary and holds a Mathematics degree from University of Durham. He is the Chairman of the National Association of Pension Funds (NAPF), and immediate past Chairman of both the NAPF Investment Council and the Institutional Shareholders Committee (ISC). Before joining Railpen in 1998, Chris was a Principal at Aon Consulting, where he specialised in investment consultancy. Bill Galvin Bill Galvin is executive director for strategic development at the Pensions Regulator. Bill was formerly in the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP), where he led on pensions protection policy. Prior to joining DWP, he worked as a strategy consultant at IBM Consulting and in strategy and marketing for IBM Global Services. In DWP, Bill was responsible for (among other things) the policy framework governing the Pensions Regulator and PPF. In IBM, Bill held several roles in strategy and marketing in the services business, leading many initiatives in IBM's transformation to a services led company. As a strategy consultant, Bill helped some of the largest international companies create and deliver value from mergers and acquisitions. Prior to joining IBM, Bill completed an MBA at Manchester Business School, and has work and consulting experience in pharmaceuticals, banking and publishing. Mark Johnson Mark Johnson, Managing Director and client relationship manager, is head of UK institutional business development and responsible for client relationship management of charities and pension funds. Mr. Johnson's service with the firm dates back to 1998 including his years with Merrill Lynch Investment Managers (MLIM), which merged with BlackRock in 2006. Prior to joining MLIM, his career began as a portfolio manager at Cazenove & Co where he worked in the international investment team. He then worked in marketing in London and Canada. At MLIM, Mark worked in the Global Consultants Group with responsibility for the firm's relationship with UK and European investment consultants.
